Only a few of the new establishment which has taken over the once liberal and humane Democratic party actually believe this nonsense. It is just one of the many features of the good old divide and rule principle - used by every authoritarian regime since time immemorial. Take a minority, the smaller the better, declare it a victim and castigate the majority for persecuting it. But representatives of that majority have been slow and weak in opposing this disgusting campaign, for fear of being seen as illiberal. Of course, the media is on side, having abandoned journalism in favour of propaganda. But we need more loud expressions of outrage from the majority.
