The distortion of language is one of the hallmarks of authoritarianism. It also allows truth to be disguised. The word "populism" is an interesting example. It can be used in a pejorative sense or as a complement. Representative government is by definition populist as - if faithfully executed, it empowers the populace. Unfortunately, it no longer exists in the US as the legislature represents special interests rather than the people. The terms "republic" and "democracy" are deemed interchangeable by some, and implying differences by others. The tragedy is that everything - polls, think tank prophesies, electoral analysis, is all academic in the absence of election integrity.
