A Right-On Guide for Tuesday's Voting
Please, don't wake up Wednesday and launch a conservative resistance because Democrats have re-taken the House and the liberal press decide to crow a little bit. As a generalization, America does well with divided government and mid-terms favor the out-party. If you are a center-right or center-left voter, think about the bigger picture. If your mind is not made up, don't vote based on your feelings for or against President Trump. That would be akin to refusing a date with Kate Upton because her roommate's obnoxious (or asking Lindsay Lohan out because you enjoyed The Parent Trap).
If your mind is not made up, I humbly offer this 4-point Election Guide. Vote for a Democrat...any Democrat...if you care more about seeing Donald Trump's tax returns than getting a 10% reduction on your taxable income or believe the convenience of a welfare check does more for a man's dignity than an employer's check. Vote for a Republican...any Republican...if you cried "Hallelujah" when Lindsay Graham tore into "power hungry" Senate Democrats during the second Kavanaugh hearing or think Trump is tackling big problems that were left undone by Bush and Obama.
This particular election is too close to call because Democrats took too long to find their "health care" message. If the lead-up polling is correct, Democrats should win a small majority in the House, and Republicans will add a few seats to their Senate majority. To be sure, Democrats will get oversight fever and waste time digging for dirt on Trump and his cabinet, but they are also likely to reform Obamacare and immigration, pass an infrastructure bill, and reverse the worst parts of Bill Clinton's crime bill (which incarcerated too many blacks for simple drug possession)...precisely because the man they loathe (Trump) is not a pointy-headed-conservative wonk.
Trump will still be president Wednesday morning, when impeachment talk will be just that: all talk! If that is a problem for you, then don't watch CNN, MSNBC or CNBC. The president will continue to de-regulate businesses and modernize America's trade deals. He will continue pressing North Korea and Iran to abandon their nuclear dreams. He will continue nominating - and the Senate will keep confirming - conservative judges and (maybe) justices. The USA economy and household finances will continue to improve, setting the stage for the truly consequential election of 2020.
Let's reconvene next week to collect the dead and consider our blue-wave survival guide if needed. Until then, remember election results are fleeting, the federal government will still have separation of powers, and no House member will change Donald Trump. He will keep tweeting and holding rallies. Above all, enjoy the Trump economy and do the Hokey Pokey, because that's (still) what it’s all about!
